Located in the heart of the country on the Great Plains, Nebraska is a fertile state with a rich agricultural, ranching, and pioneer history. Lewis and Clark traveled through part of what is now Nebraska, and early pioneers built protective forts here. A different type of traveler still makes annual stops in the Nebraska Sandhills - the majestic Sandhill Crane.

The landscape is mostly grassland, but there are surprisingly diverse regions tucked throughout Nebraska. Numerous scenic highways and byways traverse the state, revealing the quiet beauty of Nebraska to those who travel them.

The Bridges to Buttes Byway travels nearly 200 miles across the northwest corner of the state. The scenery transforms from rolling sandhills to stark buttes and bluffs in the Nebraska badlands, location of the unusual Toadstool Geologic Park. 385 - Gold Rush Byway, also in western Nebraska, runs along a well-traveled road that was used to take gold out of the Black Hills during the late 1880s; there are numerous historical attractions in Nebraska well worth a stop; and the Lewis & Clark Scenic Byway, which follows a beautiful stretch of the Missouri River along Nebraska's eastern border, is a road that should be traveled.

The Loup Rivers Scenic Byway runs through cowboy country, where vacation Dude Ranches abound. Some Nebraska vacation ranches offer guests the opportunity to live the cowboy life. Some guests may want to sit back and appreciate the wide open open spaces and fresh air. Others may rise with the sun and spend their days in the saddle driving or roping a herd of cattle. Guests are welcome to ride along a vast fence line, stopping to mend areas in need of repair. The work can be hard, but the rewards are great.
