The Hideout Lodge and Guest Ranch
Most guests fly into Cody, Wyo., to visit The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch, which is nestled at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. The Hideout is an upscale working cattle & riding guest ranch limited to 25 guests and shares 300,000 acres with the 100-year old Flitner Ranch in Shell, Wyo. The Flitner herd of approx. 1,500 Black Angus grazes a combination of private property, BLM Lands and National Forest at elevations varying between 4,200 to 10,000 feet. In additional to riding this vast amount of land, our wranglers and guests also ride in the Cloud Peak Wilderness.
The Hideout takes pride in their high percentage of repeat guests, amongst which are many international travelers; The Hideout’s multilingual and multicultural staff, owners and managing family offer a bit of international flair mixed with 100-year old Wyoming tradition. Since 2009, The Hideout has focused strongly on increasing the quality of the horsemanship & equestrian riding program in order to meet the expectations of experienced riders and guests. In addition to this, The Hideout embraces low stress horsemanship and stockmanship and educates their guests about these practices while participating in cattle work, cattle drives and other hands-on work on the ranch.
The Hideout privately owns and trains a vast majority of the horses used during the season, including a string of once-wild Mustangs available for guests to ride. A full-time clinician and horse trainer gives clinics, rides with the guests and teaches both beginners and experienced horsemen alike. The Hideout staff and guests participate in much of the cattle work for the ranch operation in rarely seen diversity of scenery – a leading reason why guests come back every year.
At The Hideout, advanced riders will find experienced wranglers, cowboys and cowgirls, excellent horses and rides varying from leisurely and relaxing to fast-paced and challenging. Beginning or intermediate riders will find very patient instructors and safe, willing horses.
The Hideout offers additional non-riding activities like trapshooting, fly-fishing, hiking, canoeing, hiking, biking and 4x4 mountain tours with wine and a picnic. The Hideout’s regular guest season runs from April 1 through October 31st with the possibility for limited advanced riding or group programs during the first two weeks of November. While most of The Hideout’s spring and fall guests are adults, the summer months of June, July and August see many families, often times repeat guests watching their children grow up with the wonderful tradition of visiting a guest ranch annually. The Hideout does not offer a special kids program with counselors or nannies, because we believe that families should enjoy this true ranch experience and special vacation together.
Guests sleep in comfortable, impeccably kept and Western-decorated log cabins, each equipped with a private bathroom, small refrigerator, cable television, wireless internet and rocking chairs on a semi-private porch overlooking the property and Big Horn Mountains. Beds and rooms are discreetly cleaned on a daily basis with a regular mid-week sheet change and dedication to detail. The Hideout’s executive chef is culinary schooled, creative and very attentive and accommodating of dietary requests; the dining experience at The Hideout has earned a great reputation and adds to the desire for guests to come back again and again.
