Lone Mountain Ranch

A clear mountain stream runs through the middle of the Ranch, which sits in a small valley at the base of the mountains near the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. The Ranch provides a warm, relaxed western atmosphere with just the right creature comforts to help guests "get away from it all" in their special Ranch home. This magical environment brings guests back year after year to our historic ranch in southwest Montana.
Surrounded by mountains, guests  experience all of the scenic beauty, natural wonders and recreational opportunities that abound in Yellowstone Country.

Summer is family time at the Ranch, with activities for all ages. Explore mountain ranges atop a horse - truly a western adventure. Join guided hikes for all ability levels and learn about the wildlife, wildlfowers, geology and history of this part of the world. Tours into Yellowstone give guests a unique perspective on the natural wonders of our first national park and the birds and wildlife living there. Mountain biking, sea kayaking and canoeing are another way to experience the world around Big Sky.

The Ranch's Outdoor Youth Adventures Program (for children ages 4-18) leaves kids begging to come back each year. Here, they discover nature, make new friends and build self-confidence. Experienced youth counselors lead children through the confidence course/ropes course and many other adventures. We have special activities for teens.

Meal times are special at the Ranch - a time to savor wholesome, flavorful cuisine and enjoy the camaraderie of other guests, many of whom become lifelong friends. Most meals are enjoyed in the Dining Lodge. With its massive stone fireplace and elk antler chandeliers, the Lodge is an elegant yet warmly western gathering place. It's a relaxed, informal setting where folks can pull up a chair at a table of other guests, enjoying both good food and good conversation. Our Chef Ian Troxler was recently nominated by the James Beard Foundation as a semi-finalist in the category of Best Chef in the Pacific Northwest. The James Beard Foundation is the nations's most prestigious recognition program honoring professionals in the food and beverage industry.

Summer outdoor BBQ's are a fun time to sit under a Montana blue sky and enjoy some delectable  western ranch fare. In the winter, guests are treated to outdoor trail buffets and memorable dinner sleigh rides during their week.

Few places in the country offer the diversity of ski experiences that are available at Lone Mountain Ranch. Whether it is Nordic skiing on 100km of exceptional ski trails, world class downhill skiing or exploring Yellowstone National Park's amazing winter wonderland on backcountry ski tours, the Ranch is the perfect base for discovering Yellowstone Country in the winter months, too.

Downhill skiers can access nearby Big Sky Ski Resort and Moonlight Basin via a free shuttle that makes regular runs to and from the Ranch throughout the day. For snowshoers, there are over 20 kilometers of packed trails that leave right from the Ranch. Yellowstone Park ski tours are a favorite among guests, who have a chance to see wintering herds of elk and bison, as well as wolves and unique thermal features on day long guided excursions.

Fall is a quite time at the Ranch, as children are back in school. It's a perfect time to visit Yellowstone and fish area rivers without the summer crowds. It's also a great time for groups and conferences to conduct productive and unique meetings in a secluded ranch atmosphere.

The Ranch has all of the creature comforts as well. Cozy log cabins with featherbeds, down comforters and western furnishings provide a comfortable home away from home in the mountains of Montana. Once a week, guests board sleighs harnessed to massive draft horses for a journey through the woods to our North Fork Cabin, where a prime rib feast cooked on a century old cook stove and cowboy entertainment awaits - a truly unique "Old West" evening.

Both guests and crew are a major ingredient in the magical environment created at the Ranch. Many guests who rarely vacation at the same place twice, come back to Lone Mountain Ranch year after year and in both the summer and winter seasons! Guest make lifelong friends and return the same week each year to their special cabins. And, the crew has a genuine warmth and hospitality that is not contrived and seldom found elsewhere.

As one return guest said " As always, the lodging, food and activities were wonderful; qualities that have never varied since we began visiting the ranch in the 80's. What makes the ranch unique are the people - always smiling, interested, informative, helpful. I've yet to find another place at which everyone was consistently cheerful. Is it the weather, something in the food, special training, or just living in Montana?"

We invite you to visit our home in Montana during the summer, fall or winter to experience the Lone Mountain Ranch brand of vacation magic.

Ranch Dining

Our cuisine is inspired by the bounty of the Northwestern Rockies and takes advantage of locally produced offerings when possible and prepared to satisfy the kind of appetite that develops after exploring the outdoors. Breakfasts typically unfold with the likes of flax seed waffles, local bacon and Hutterite eggs while dinner may include such Northern Rocky Mountain cuisine as Kobe beef, elk and vegetarian options that exceed even the most grandiose expectations.
