A Week On An Authentic Wyoming Ranch – Reading, Writing and Riding

April 16th, 2012 by Kim @ The DRA

By:  Janet Rodgers, Contributor to Forbes Magazine
April 9, 2012

Hankerin’ for a creative, outdoor adventure this summer right here in the U.S.? The historic landmark Vee Bar Guest Ranch in Wyoming (2 ½ hours from Denver) beckons.  Authentic ranch is framed by the Snowy Range Mountains, pasturelands with real cattle, and cabins dotting the shore along the Little Laramie River.

The Vee Bar, located near Laramie Wyoming, is a family-friendly vacation destination that is sure to please the horse loving cowboy or cowgirl in you. A variety of activities, ranging from horseback riding to river tubing, will suit each member of your group. Experience true western hospitality!

Open to those at any level of writing and riding skills, Page Lambert, award-winning author and writing coach, and Sheri Griffith, legendary sportswoman/adventurer, invite you for one unique week, June 2 – June 7, 2012.  “Through the Eyes of the Horse – Literature & Landscape of the Horse Retreat” will surely rekindle even the most dormant of creative fires. Learn what horsemanship can teach us about our own natural instincts instead of relying only on the intellect.

Basic requirements for the retreat: you’ve got to be interested in equine culture, be happy to ride, and you should be able to read and write. The retreat is tailored to fit each individual – so let them know

your creative goals (writing, painting, photography, journaling) and your horse-related/nature-related interests…

  • The Riding Part: Sheri teaches herd dynamics, communicating with horses, horses as working animals, horses (and us) as sensate beings in a sensate world, horse heartbeats, grooming and tacking up. Rides will be out in the open (abreast of one another) in 3 different groups – leisurely walking, trotting, and fast track. Each group has two wrangler guides, and the groups are fluid – ride with one group one day, then switch to a different one.
  • The Reading and Writing: Page leads literature discussions about horses and animals as characters, reads aloud appropriate excerpts, and shares the wisdom of ‘horse whisperers.’  She encourages immersion in the natural world, keeping journals, and dispenses fun, short writing prompts.

$300 will hold your horse.  Oprah loves these two gals and this retreat!  Cost: only $1490.

“Yoga and Horses” Retreat Package – August 12-19, 2012

March 22nd, 2012 by Kim @ The DRA

63 is not simply a “Dude Ranch” but a real genuine “Working Dude Ranch“. We provide a relaxing ranch atmosphere where you make the decision to help gather, work or salt ranch owned cattle. Or maybe you’d rather take a pass on “work” and just enjoy the beautiful scenery or take a gentle lope through the open meadows or sagebrush flats. After all, it’s “YOUR” vacation!

Built in 1929 and continues to be operated as a working dude ranch by original family. 63 provides a relaxing working ranch atmosphere on 2100 deeded acres. Children especially welcome. Comfortable cabin accommodations, including private bath/shower, ranging from 1-4 rooms. Excellent meals. RIDING IS OUR MAIN ACTIVITY. Experienced or not, riders soon become familiar with THEIR horse chosen from our string of 70 horses.

Our All-Inclusive 7-Day (Sun. to Sun.) Yoga Retreat Rate: $ 2,450.00/person (minimum 4 participants required) Please refer to our “Rates” page for reservation and cancellation policies.

If you love horses and love yoga, this is an opportunity to deepen your experience of both in a spectacular and peaceful setting at 63 Ranch! Space is limited to 8 participants. We will practice asanas (postures) that prepare us both physically and mentally for our daily riding adventures. The yoga will be a combination of seated breathing, standing postures, mild backbends and forward bends, shoulder and hip openers, and guided relaxation. We will focus on integrating the breath with movement, increasing our mindfulness, and connecting it all to our time on horseback. We will plan on at least one yoga class per day, with individual lessons available as time and space allow.

Some yoga experience is helpful but not required. Please bring comfortable clothing in which you can move, and layers for cool days. Please let us know if you will need us to provide a mat for you. There will be a limited number of other props available. We welcome singles, couples or families. Minimum participant age – 15 years.

Our instructor, Kris Backes began her practice of yoga in 2001 as part of her recovery from an injury. She credits yoga with improving her overall health and well-being, as well as supporting her through several life changes. Kris began her love of horses as a young girl in the early 60′s at the 63 Ranch, where she learned to love trail riding and the mountains. Her time on horseback has included many hours on many trails throughout the Northwest, plus general horsemanship work, and competitive team penning.

Kris’s yoga classes focus on alignment, increasing strength and flexibility, and mindfulness, all complementary to working with horses. She does not adhere to any one lineage in her teaching, but draws from the several schools of yoga that she has studied. Kris works to help each student modify the postures for his or her individual needs. She is known for giving individual attention in her classes.

Kris holds a 200 hour yoga teaching certificate in alignment-focused hatha yoga from Amrita: a sanctuary for yoga in Portland, Oregon; and a 500 hour teaching certificate in Ashtanga yoga from Brahmani Yoga in Goa, India. She returned to India in the fall of 2011 for three months to study the deeper aspects of yoga and its sister health science, Ayurveda. She is registered with the Yoga Alliance, and has been teaching since 2008.

White Stallion Ranch workshop updates!

December 15th, 2011 by Kim @ The DRA

Posted on December 1, 2011 by tessa

The Stoecklein book, Dude Ranches of the American West, features a satisfying excerpt describing the beauty anyone can find at the White Stallion Ranch workshop on January 12-14, 2012!

Click here to view the workshop’s website!  Call 208.726.5191 ext 15 or email tess@drsphoto.net to reserve your spot!

Dude Ranch book exerpt:
White Stallion Ranch

Tucson, Arizona is one of those sprawling, fast-growing Western cities built around great weather, natural beauty, and a relaxed lifestyle. It also has the distinction of being the longest continuously inhabited settlement in the United States. Leaving civilization behind and crossing the Tucson Mountains means going through the mountain pass where the Butterfield Stage was robbed of $500,00 of silver in 1873. That pass and the dirt road that follows mark the entrance to the White Stallion Ranch. The peaks of the Safford and Panther mountains loom majestically behind the ranch in one of the most picturesque spots in the Southwest. The ranch has been featured in countless movies and television shows since the 1940s as it represents a classic picture of Arizona with rugged mountains, tall Saguaro cactus, and untouched land.

The ranch itself dates back to the turn of the century when it was a working cattle ranch. In 1940, Max Zimmerman, a liquor store owner, bought the property and added guest accommodations. Legend has it that he used the ranch as a retreat for his “special” friends from the liquor business. A couple decades later, a Colorado oil man, Allen True, and his wife, Cynthia, were searching for a new life and good weather and decided to purchase the ranch in the 1965 and bring their sons there.

Their decision was prompted by Allen’s return to Denver after a trip to find a full-force blizzard raging. He had endured cold and snow throughout his life, but had finally had enough. He decided on the spot to move to Tucson and boarded a plane that very night. Upon his arrival, he found over 30 dude ranches in the area and several for sale. White Stallion was in the most remote location and seemed the most likely to succeed over the long term with Tucson’s rapid expansion. Initially, Cynthia was resistant to buying a dude ranch, as they had no experience running one. But finally, as she loves to tell the story, “I told Allen that as long as I could look at those mountains every morning I wake up, I would let him throw our life away.”

Allen and Cynthia went to work immediately to upgrade the buildings and facilities and put the ranch back together. Much of the original land had been sold over the years, but they were able to expand the property from 200 acres to more than 3,000. Today, Allen and Cynthia’s sons and their wives own and operate the ranch. Russell and Michael feel privileged to honor their parents’ legacy and protect the ranch and share it with guests.

Though still a working cattle ranch, White Stallion has upgraded the accommodations and added may comforts to the lodge and facilities. Southern Arizona architecture is greatly influenced by its Spanish roots, which is evident in the ranch buildings. The original ranch house, now the main dining room, is a 100-year-old adobe structure. The arches, sweeping patios, stucco walls, fountains, and southwest warmth and décor, mixed in with the spacious and beautifully landscaped desert grounds create a classic Arizona ranch setting.
